Minnesota Carry Permit Questions
Can I get my Minnesota concealed carry permit from you?
Nope! Minnesota doesn't have "concealed carry" permits. We have carry permits, and concealing is not required, though it is allowed.
Okay, so can I get my Minnesota carry permit from you?
You can start the process with me. To get a Minnesota Permit to Carry a Pistol, you must 1) successfully complete a class like mine, then 2) apply in person at your county sheriff's office (if you're from out of state, you can apply in any county in the state).
What is the class like?
The class consists of about five hours in the classroom, then a trip to the range for a brief shooting qualification exercise.
Is the shooting qualification difficult?
If you already know how to safely handle, load, shoot and unload a revolver or semi-auto pistol, you shouldn't have any problem passing the qualification. If you're brand new to shooting, you will need to get some basic instruction, either from my beginner class, or from another source, before shooting your qualification.
If you're not sure, or just have a question, please feel free to contact me.
If for some reason you're not ready, or are having a bad day, don't worry. If it's a small issue, I'll help you fix it. If you really don't have the skill, I'll recommend that you get some practice or instruction, as needed, and come to my next class to retake the qualification. I don't charge extra, but you will pay another $13.50 range fee.
General Gun Questions
Do I need to get a Minnesota gun license?
No. The state of Minnesota does not license guns. You do need a "permit to purchase" before you can buy either a pistol or a scary-looking rifle from a licensed dealer. If you want to have the gun on your person, you will also need a permit to carry a pistol, with some very narrow exceptions. You've come to the right place for that!
What is a Minnesota permit to purchase a pistol?
In Minnesota, to buy a pistol or what the state calls a "semiautomatic military-style assault weapon" (a scary-looking rifle) from a gun dealer, you need a " Transferee Permit," more commonly known as a "permit to purchase."
You can get one of these at no charge by filling out a brief form at your local police department (or sheriff's office, if there's no police department where you live). They are supposed to issue such a permit within seven calendar days, but many departments flout the law and take much longer.
If this happens to you, please contact me. Departments that repeatedly fail to meet legal standards sometimes get inquiring letters from attorneys. :)
